Ego Lite

Overview

Ego Lite is a browser designed specifically for AI agents to perform web automation while sharing your logged-in browser state — without disrupting your own browsing. Built by Citrolabs, Ego Lite represents a new approach to agent web automation: instead of CLI-based commands, it exposes browser capabilities as JavaScript functions that agents can call directly, enabling 2.5× faster execution with substantially fewer tokens.

With 3,800+ GitHub stars and 980+ stars per day, Ego Lite has rapidly become the most compelling browser tool for AI agents in 2026. It is free, open-source (MIT license), and compatible with any agent including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and custom agents.

The key innovation is Ego Lite's dedicated Spaces feature: each agent gets an isolated workspace where it can browse, while you browse in the foreground. The browser inherits your Chrome logins, cookies, extensions, and bookmarks on first launch — solving the most painful problem in agent web automation: authenticated sessions.

Features

  • JavaScript Function API: Agents call browser capabilities directly as JS functions — 2.5× faster than CLI-based approaches
  • Dedicated Spaces: Each agent gets an isolated workspace; your tabs remain untouched
  • Parallel Multitasking: Multiple agents or tasks run simultaneously without collision
  • Chrome State Inheritance: Logins, cookies, extensions, and bookmarks available on first launch
  • Superior Page Snapshots: Kernel-level customization handles deeply nested iframes that break other tools
  • Universal Agent Support: Works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or custom agents via ego-browser skill
  • Experience Accumulation: Reusable tools and workflows make similar tasks run up to 5× faster over time (coming soon)
  • Zero Configuration: Download and run — no API keys or complex setup required
  • Frame-Anchored Comments: Precise UI element targeting for reliable automation
  • Cross-platform Roadmap: macOS available now; Windows and Linux planned

Installation

Option 1: Download macOS App

  1. Download the .dmg file:
  2. Mount the .dmg and drag Ego Lite to Applications
  3. First launch prompts whether to migrate Chrome data

Option 2: Command Line (Skill Only)

npx skills add citrolabs/ego-lite

This installs just the ego-browser skill to every agent's skills directory without the browser app.

Option 3: Agent-Assisted Setup

Paste this into your agent:

Set up ego lite for me: https://github.com/citrolabs/ego-lite
Read `skills/ego-browser/references/install.md` and follow the steps

Quick Start

# 1. Launch Ego Lite and migrate Chrome data when prompted

# 2. In your agent CLI, use the ego-browser skill
/ego-browser follow @ego_agent on x.com for me

The agent automatically:

  1. Picks up the ego-browser skill
  2. Opens the page in its own dedicated Space
  3. Reads a high-quality snapshot of the page
  4. Acts on the page (clicks, types, navigates)
  5. Reports back while your tabs stay untouched

Quick Start Examples

# Follow an account on social media
/ego-browser follow @ego_agent on x.com for me

# Scrape competitor pricing
/ego-browser visit competitor-site.com and extract pricing information

# Fill out a form
/ego-browser fill out the contact form on example.com with my info

Core Concepts

Spaces

A Space is an isolated browser context dedicated to one agent. Each Space inherits your Chrome data (logins, cookies, extensions, bookmarks) but runs in a completely separate environment. You can browse in your normal tabs while agents work in their Spaces — no collision, no tab stealing.

JavaScript Function API

Instead of CLI commands like "click element at x,y", Ego Lite exposes browser capabilities as JavaScript functions. This is fundamentally more efficient:

  • Fewer round trips: One function call instead of multiple CLI commands
  • Less token usage: JS functions are more concise than natural language descriptions
  • More precise: Direct DOM manipulation instead of coordinate-based clicking

Page Snapshots

Ego Lite produces high-quality page snapshots that AI agents can "see" and act on. The kernel-level customization handles edge cases that break other browser tools:

  • Deeply nested iframes
  • Shadow DOM elements
  • Dynamic content loaded via JavaScript
  • Single-page application routing

Advanced Features

Parallel Spaces

# Agent 1: Follow accounts
/ego-browser follow @user1 and @user2 on x.com

# Agent 2: Scrape data (runs in parallel Space)
/ego-browser visit analytics.com and extract metrics

Experience Accumulation

Ego Lite learns from repeated tasks, creating reusable workflows:

// First run: agent figures out how to log in to your CRM
// Second run: agent uses the learned workflow — 5× faster

Custom Skill Configuration

# View ego-browser skill reference
cat skills/ego-browser/references/install.md

# Configure custom Spaces
ego-lite config --space-name "scraper-1"

Examples

Social Media Automation

/ego-browser visit twitter.com, search for "#AIagents", and follow the top 5 accounts

Lead Enrichment

/ego-browser visit linkedin.com, search for "VP of Engineering at AI startups",
and export the top 10 results to a CSV

Competitor Analysis

/ego-browser visit competitor-a.com, competitor-b.com, and competitor-c.com,
then extract pricing information and feature lists

Form Filling

/ego-browser fill out the registration form on event.com with:
- Name: John Doe
- Email: john@example.com
- Company: My Company

Pros

  • ✅ 2.5× faster than CLI-based browser agents (agent-browser)
  • ✅ Fewer tokens for complex tasks — the gap widens with complexity
  • ✅ Chrome state inheritance — solves the authenticated session problem
  • ✅ Isolated Spaces — agents work without disrupting your browsing
  • ✅ Parallel multitasking — multiple agents work simultaneously
  • ✅ Universal agent support — works with any agent via ego-browser skill
  • ✅ Free and open-source — MIT license
  • ✅ Kernel-level iframe support — handles edge cases other tools miss
  • ✅ Zero configuration — download and run

Cons

  • ❌ macOS only — Windows and Linux on roadmap but not yet available
  • ❌ Relatively new — Smaller community compared to established tools
  • ❌ Requires Chrome — Safari and Firefox support not yet confirmed
  • ❌ Experience accumulation — Key feature marked "coming soon"

When to Use

Ego Lite is ideal for:

  • Authenticated web automation — Tasks that require logged-in sessions
  • Complex multi-step workflows — Where CLI-based tools are too slow
  • Parallel agent tasks — When multiple agents need browser access simultaneously
  • iframe-heavy sites — Enterprise dashboards, embedded content, shadow DOM
  • Social media automation — Following, posting, scraping with authenticated access

Ego Lite is less suitable for:

  • Simple single-page scraping — May be overkill for basic tasks
  • Windows/Linux users — macOS only until broader platform support
