Hermes WebUI

Overview

Hermes WebUI is a full-featured browser interface for the Hermes Agent, providing full CLI parity from any web browser or mobile device. At 16,600+ GitHub stars, it is the most popular web-based interface for running Hermes Agent.

Built with vanilla Python and JavaScript — no build step, no framework, no bundler — Hermes WebUI delivers a clean, fast, and dependency-minimal experience that gets out of the way of the agent itself.

Features

  • Full CLI parity: Every Hermes Agent capability is available in the web interface
  • Three-panel layout: Chat, sessions, and files organized in an intuitive multi-panel workspace
  • Streaming responses: Real-time streaming of agent responses, identical to the CLI experience
  • Session management: Persistent sessions with history, naming, and easy switching
  • Voice input: Dictate prompts directly from the browser
  • Profile switching: Seamlessly switch between different Hermes Agent configurations
  • Mobile responsive: Full functionality on phones and tablets
  • Customizable themes: Light, dark, and custom color themes
  • Security: Optional password authentication and passkey support

Core Concepts

Full CLI Parity

Unlike many web interfaces that are simplified wrappers around the CLI, Hermes WebUI is designed to deliver the exact same experience. Every flag, every setting, and every Hermes Agent capability is accessible from the web. This makes it suitable as a primary interface, not just a lightweight preview.

Three-Panel Workspace

  • Chat panel: The primary conversation interface with Hermes Agent, supporting streaming, file uploads, and voice input
  • Sessions panel: Manage multiple agent sessions, switch between them, and access conversation history
  • Files panel: Browse, create, edit, and manage files within the agent's workspace — full file operations from the browser

No Build Step Architecture

Hermes WebUI is intentionally built with zero build tooling. There is no Webpack, no Vite, no React build step. This means:

  • Instant server startup
  • Zero dependency conflicts
  • Easy customization by anyone who knows HTML/CSS/JS
  • Smaller attack surface

Advanced Features

Profile Switching

Users can define multiple Hermes Agent profiles with different configurations (different models, different tool sets, different system prompts) and switch between them instantly from the web interface without restarting the server.

Passkey Authentication

Beyond simple password auth, Hermes WebUI supports WebAuthn passkeys for passwordless, phishing-resistant authentication — useful for shared or public-facing deployments.

Theme System

The theme system uses CSS custom properties, making it trivial to create custom themes. Users can define their own color palettes, font choices, and spacing without modifying application code.

Pros

  • ✅ Full Hermes Agent CLI parity in the browser
  • ✅ Zero build step — pure Python and vanilla JS
  • ✅ Mobile responsive with full functionality
  • ✅ Voice input and streaming responses
  • ✅ Optional authentication (password + passkeys)
  • ✅ Docker and Nix deployment support
  • ✅ Lightweight and easy to self-host

Cons

  • ❌ Only works with Hermes Agent — not a generic agent UI
  • ❌ Requires running the Hermes Agent server first
  • ❌ No native desktop app (browser-only)
  • ❌ Less feature-rich than full IDE integrations (Cursor, Claude Code desktop)

When to Use

Hermes WebUI is ideal for:

  • Running Hermes Agent from a web browser or phone without installing a CLI
  • Sharing Hermes Agent access with team members who prefer a web interface
  • Deploying Hermes Agent on a server and accessing it remotely
  • Self-hosting an agent interface that is lightweight and easy to maintain
  • Quick experimentation with Hermes Agent before committing to a CLI workflow
