MCP-Agent vs LangGraph
Overview
Both MCP-Agent and LangGraph are Python agent frameworks, but they take fundamentally different approaches to orchestration. MCP-Agent treats MCP servers as the primitive and builds Anthropic's Building Effective Agents patterns on top. LangGraph treats graphs and state as the primitive, with MCP as an optional integration.
Choosing between them depends on whether your mental model is "agents as tools" (MCP-Agent) or "agents as state machines" (LangGraph).
Comparison Table
| Feature | MCP-Agent | LangGraph |
|---|---|---|
| Primitive abstraction | MCP server | State graph |
| Mental model | Agents as composables | Agents as state machines |
| MCP support | Native, first-class | Optional, via integration |
| Durable state | Not built-in | Checkpointers (Postgres, SQLite, memory) |
| Time-travel debugging | No | Yes |
| Streaming | Token-level, native | Node-level, with streaming options |
| Pattern library | Anthropic Building Effective Agents | LangGraph templates |
| Swarm / handoff | First-class Swarm | Via edges |
| Observability | Basic logs | LangSmith integration |
| Deployment | DIY | LangGraph Platform |
| Learning curve | Moderate | Steeper |
| Stars | ~1K | ~60K+ |
| Maturity | Young | Mature |
When to Choose MCP-Agent
- You're building on top of MCP servers and want MCP as the primitive
- You want Anthropic's Building Effective Agents patterns implemented as first-class primitives
- You need multi-provider LLM support with a single API (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq, Ollama)
- You're prototyping and want fast iteration with YAML config
- You prefer composable functions over graph definitions
When to Choose LangGraph
- You need durable execution with checkpoints and resume-after-crash
- You need time-travel debugging to inspect past states
- You're building complex, long-running workflows with branching and cycles
- You want production observability with LangSmith
- You want a managed deployment platform (LangGraph Platform)
- You need enterprise features — auth, multi-tenancy, RBAC
- You're already invested in the LangChain ecosystem
Detailed Trade-offs
Abstraction vs. Flexibility
MCP-Agent's AugmentedLLM is deliberately simple — one LLM wrapped with tool access. Composition happens by chaining these. LangGraph's state graphs are more expressive (cycles, branching, dynamic edges) but require more upfront design.
If your agents are mostly sequential or tree-shaped, MCP-Agent is faster to write. If they're graphs with feedback loops, LangGraph is a better fit.
Persistence
LangGraph's killer feature is checkpointing: every node execution is a checkpoint, so you can resume a failed workflow, replay it, or inspect intermediate states. MCP-Agent doesn't do this — you're responsible for persistence.
Ecosystem Maturity
LangGraph has ~60K GitHub stars, extensive documentation, and a managed platform. MCP-Agent has ~1K stars and no managed offering. For production workloads with high stakes, LangGraph is safer.
MCP Native vs. MCP Integrated
MCP-Agent was designed from scratch for MCP. LangGraph added MCP support as an integration — it works, but the primitive abstraction is graphs, not MCP servers.
Example: Same Task, Two Approaches
Research Agent in MCP-Agent
from mcp_agent import AugmentedLLM
researcher = AugmentedLLM(
model="gpt-4o",
system_prompt="You research topics and write reports.",
server_names=["fetch", "arxiv", "filesystem"]
)
report = researcher.run("Write a 500-word report on MCP adoption.")
Same in LangGraph
from langgraph.graph import StateGraph, START, END
from langgraph.checkpoint.memory import MemorySaver
def research(state):
return {"notes": fetch_and_arxiv_search(state["query"])}
def write(state):
return {"report": llm.invoke(f"Write report from: {state['notes']}")}
graph = StateGraph(dict)
graph.add_node("research", research)
graph.add_node("write", write)
graph.add_edge(START, "research")
graph.add_edge("research", "write")
graph.add_edge("write", END)
app = graph.compile(checkpointer=MemorySaver())
report = app.invoke({"query": "MCP adoption"}, config={"configurable": {"thread_id": "1"}})
Verdict
Choose MCP-Agent if you're building on top of MCP servers and want Anthropic's Building Effective Agents patterns as primitives.
Choose LangGraph if you need durable execution, time-travel debugging, production observability, or a managed deployment platform.
Many teams use both: MCP-Agent for prototyping and exploration, LangGraph for production workflows that need state.
